Chch teams win marching

Christchurch teams gained the highest aggregate marks in all three grades in the Ashburton Marching Association’s annual championships held at the Ashburton Domain oval yesterday.

The Skellerup Militaires won the senior championship, taking the Max Gilbert Cup and medals for the champion team and the Bruce Skinner Cup for the highest aggregate points. Motorways Royal Guards won the junior championship and aggregate, and Blue Star Taxis won the midget teams championship and aggregate.

Conditions were perfect for the contest and the Domain Oval was a riot of colour as the 320 marching girls in 32 teams from centres between Rangiora and Walmate performed to a large crowd of spectators. The warm sunshine and colour of the occasion made for a picnic atmosphere throughout the day. The precision displays of the various teams indicated the many hundreds of hours of practice by the girls to reach championship standard. The teams performed individually before the judges and at the conclusion of individual judging a march past and a maze march completed the programme. The chief judge of the championships, Mr H. Hodges, of Timaru, said- the over-all standard of marching of the teams was good and there had been an excellent entry of teams in ell grades. , . . The senior championship attracted seven teams and there were 12 teams entered in the junior grade and 13 in the midgets r grade. The Blain’s Kilties (Ashburton) team performed well among the local teams entered and the senior' team gained the South Canterbury Marching Centre award for the most improved aggregate in this grade.
