Nine to be ordained

Nine candidates for the Anglican ministry spent 24 hours in silence this weekend in preparation for their ordination in the Christchurch Cathedral tonight. Three men are to be ordained deacons and six priests. Six of the candidates are from Christchurch, one is from Ashburton, and one is from Cariboo, in Canada. He is Mr A. J. Courage, who will return to work in the church in British Columbia soon after his ordination. He is a Christchurch man who has been in Canada for the last five years. Last year eight men were ordained. This year 20 candidates from the Christchurch diocese are in training for the ministry, one more than last year. Six are studying overseas, eight are training at St John’s College in Auckland, and the remainder are studying at universities throughout the country. The conductor of the retreat, which began on Friday at Christchurch College, was the Rev. J. L. Barker, vicar of New Brighton.
