Canterbury tennis team successful

The Canterbury men’s tennis team beat Otago by seven rubbers to three in the South Island elimination final for the Wilding Shield at Logan Park yesterday.

The best match was undoubtedly that between the No. 1 players, D. A. Radford (Otago) and C. G. Judge (Canterbury), which was decided on a tie-breaker. On Saturday, Canterbury won three out of four matches against South Canterbury in the first singles, the two doubles matches, and all four of the second singles, for a 9-1 over-all victory.

Radford lost to W. Edgecumbe, 6- 2-6, 3-6; D. Huband lost to Judge, 1-6, 0-6; S. White lost to S. Menzies, 6-4, 4-6, 1-6; S. Bentley beat B. Aldridge, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Radford and Bentley lost to Judge and Edgecumbe, 1-6, 2-6; White and Huband beat Aid* ridge and Menzies, 6-3, 6-4. Radford beat Judge, 6-2, 4-6, 7- Huband lost to Edgecumbe, 0-6, 0-6; White lost to Aldridge, 3-6, 2-6; Bentley lost to Menzies, 3-6, 5-7. Canterbury v. South Canter* bury (Canterbury names first): Menzies beat C. Workman, 6-1, 6-1; Aldridge beat J. Jamieson, 6-0, 6-2; Edgecumbe lost to J. Souter, 4-6, 6-7; Judge beat J. Keeland, 6-1, 6-3. Edgecumbe and Judge beat Souter and Workman, 7-5, 6-4; Menzies and Aldridge beat Kelland and Jamieson, 7-6. 6-7, 6-1. Edgecumbe beat Kelland, 6-2, 6-0; Judge beat Souter, 6-3, 6-1.

WELLINGTON WINS ! At Palmerston North, Wellington won the elimination series for the lower North Island when it beat Hutt Valley. 6-4, yester day. On Saturday, Wellington easily coped with Central Districts, 8-2. and Hutt Valley had a similar win over Hawke’s Bay. Wellington v. Hutt Valley (Hutt Valley names first): B. Shute beat J. Roach, 6-3, 6-4; B. Hegarty beat P. Angland, 6-2, 6-4; P. Fyfe lost to A. Panin, 1-6, 3-6; R. Rae lost to D. Hawkes, 1-6, 5-7. Shute beat Angland, 6-1, 6-3; Hegarty lost to Roach, 1-6, 6-3, 6-7; Fyfe lost to Hawkes, 6-7, 1-6; Rae lost to Parun, 6-3, 3-6. Rae and Hegarty beat Hawkes and Angland, 6-2, 6-3; Shute and Fyfe lost to Parun and Roach, 6-7, 7-6, 3-6.

K. T. O’Carroll, the No. 1 Northland man, played brilliantly throughout the week-end to win all his single matches in the northern zone series.

On Saturday, he led Northland to a 7-3 win over North Shore, but yesterday, despite his efforts, Northland went down, 4-6, to Waikato, which now goes on to the final round-robin tournament.

Wellington was well-placed in its women’s Nunneley Casket against Hutt Valley when rain stopped play yesterday. After the first set of singles, Wellington led 3-1. On Saturday, Wellington beat Hawke’s Bay, 7-3.
