World XI batting again collapses

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

SYDNEY.

The World XI collapsed again yesterday against New South Wales at Sydney Cricket Ground after its early batsmen had given the side a successful start.

New South Wales had closed its first innings at 256 for three in reply to the World XI total of 224, and at stumps the tourists had lost nine for 296 in its second innings.

With one day remaining, the World XI had a lead of 264 runs and one wicket standing. The boundary-studded batting of the international team and a devastating spell of bowling by the Australian test spinner. J. Gleeson, in which he took three wickets

for five runs, highlighted the day’s play. Gleeson, who earlier had the troublesome C. H. Lloyd caught for 58, dismissed Intikhab Alam for 13, R. Taylor two and R. S. Cunis four. The World XI, with the good start of 241 for four, lost its last five batsmen for only 51 runs. When play started, the tall South African bowler, A. Greig, quickly removed the overnight New South Wales batsmen, B. Francis for 87 and G. Davies for 100. The century by Davies was his first for New South Wales since 1968 when he scored

127 against Victoria, and his partnership with Francis put on 171 runs. S. Gaveskar laid the foundation to the World Xi’s second innings, hitting 95, including 15 fours. But he had a charmed life, being dropped before he had scored, and at eight and 27. Scores: WORLD XI First innings 224 Second innings H. Ackerman c Colley b Bernard 12 S.
