Large order for Tolley

Tolley Industries, Ltd, Wellington-based heavy electrical manufacturing firm, has announced that it has won a $400,000 contract to supply 123 miles of cables for the New Plymouth power station.

The marketing manager (Mr P. B. Davenport) said the contract represents the largest single order for cable that the company has ever received. The majority of it would be delivered by December, 1972, and the rest would be spread over a period ending March, 1974, be said. Involved are both crosslinked polyethylene and P.V.C. insulated power and control cables, all copper conductored. About a quarter of the order is for high voltage cables, and the balance is evenly divided between low voltage power and control cable.

Mr Davenport said it was pleasing to see that a substantial proportion of the order received included cable insulated with cross-linked polyethylene, a concept introduced by Tolley into New

Zealand three years ago and now commanding a significant market share. “That the New Zealand Electricity Department, our client in this case is now using it for this and other projects is particularly encouraging.” Mr Davenport added that whilst it was the largest cable order the firm had ever had it’ represented only a fraction of the Beil Block factory’s production capacity and could be accommodated comfortably. Orders currently in hand for the manufacturing complex justified a three-shift-a-day, six-days-a-week operation at least until next June, he reported. He said both the company’s switchgear and transformer manufacturing operations at Bell Block were also well committed on forward orders.
