They cover the waterfront
I Four traffic officers who are; : members of the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s staff work in shifts 1 to keep the waterfront under' surveillance. When cargo work! is going on, day or night, one 1 of these officers is on duty. I Extra surveillance is given! when the inter-island steamer Maori arrives or leaves because of the increase in traffic. The .officers also help visitors, either ■individuals or parties who come !to the port for sight-seeing; and a special eye is kept on children! (visiting the port. During the day, every inch of the waterfront is patrolled by; a traffic officer in a vehicle equipped with radio-telephone. The traffic officers are under the jurisdiction of the Lyttelton i Harbour Board’s traffic manager ! (Mr J. B. Graham) who can speak to the mobile traffic officer by radio-telephone from his office in the Port Building. In addition to their patrolling duties, the board’s traffic officers are responsible for the lay-out of parking areas, and for traffic signs. ARRIVALS Saturday t
