Brabin side in a tie

A Canterbury Brabin Shield cricket team tied with a North Canterbury junior team after the Canterbury team lost three wickets in the final over in the match played at Ohoka during the week-end.

North Canterbury batted first and had scored 114 for one wicket at lunch. P. Devlin scored 51 and P. Jenkins 56. Quick wickets fell after lunch, the only other batsman scoring double figures being C. Wraight (13). W. McTaggart took three for 22, A. Rule four for 46 and J. Larter three for 28.

Canterbury lost its first wicket with the score at 13, but D. Dempsey and D. Thompson took the score to 50. Wickets then fell regularly and when the final over was started two runs were needed to win with three wickets In hand. Leg-spinner D. Gatenby, who had bowled six overs for three wickets and nine runs took a wicket with his first ball and another with his fourth ball. Amid great excitement the last man was run out trying for the winning run.

The resulting tie was a fitting result to a closely contested match. Gatenby had the fine figures of five wickets for nine runs off seven overs for North Canterbury.
