Wairangi has many uses
The Lyttelton Harbour . Board's pilot cutter Wairangi, | whose major role is the task ; of taking pilots to board in* | coming ships and taking them I off outgoing ships, also does i many other tasks. The Wairangi is used on har-' hour inspections and servicing: of buoyage or moorings and a; hundred other duties. She is; never idle. Her crew of three' are experts in public relations and the Wairangi has been host, to thousands of South Island children on harbour cruises through the courtesy of the harbour-; master. She also engages in ■ rescue work and salvage missions. Formerly a privately-owned launch, the Wairangi was commandeered in the Second World War for service as an examination vessel at the heads. Later, the Lyttelton Harbour Board bought her for use as a pilot cutter. There are two other reserve launches which can be used for a similar role—Orari and Ruahine. When schoolchildren are being shown round the port or taken for a harbour cruise aboard the Wairangi they are invariably accompanied by a senior boatman from the harbourmaster’s staff. He answers a barrage of questions and supplies interest-; Ing information about the port’s features. Among his colleagues, the boatman is known as “the port education officer.”
