Smith and E. van Dillen, 7-5, 6-4. 8-6, yesterday to preserve Rumania's slim chance of upsetting the United States in the Davis Cup challenge round. The Rumanians’ doubles victory followed F. Froehling’s crucial, 3-6,1-6,6-1,6-3, 8-6, singles win over Tiriac in a match continued from the previous day. Smith had defeated Nastase, 7-5, 6-3, 6-1 in the opening singles, so that the Americans led 2-1 with the reverse singles to be played.
Rumania must win both— Tiriac v. Smith, Nastase v. Froehling— to take the Davis Cup. Only one nation. Australia, has managed that feat since Dwight Davis initiated the first international serie: 71 years ago.
