Labour gains on Drainage Bd
Labour won five of the nine city seats on the Christchurch Drainage Board, a gain of two.
Three sitting Citizens’ Association members were among the defeated candidates, and include the chairman (Mr A. J. McTainsh) who' finished well down the list. However, with outside local body area representatives, the Citizens’ Association will still hold a slight majority. A first job must be to find a chairman. Mr M. R. Carter, an experienced member, from Waimairi, could be interested now that he is in “opposition” on the City Council and not so tied as he was as a committee chairman. Another strong possibility is Mr C. H. Russell, who was returned unopposed from Heathcote, and who has been chairman of the construction committee. Alphabetical advantage worked again for Mr 'P. W. Anderson, who was elected as a 22-year-old three years
ago. He topped the poll on Saturday, although he has not been vocal at board meetings. Results: City •P. W. Anderson (L.) .. 24,177 J. Ryan (C.) .. 23,238 B. J. Corkran (L.) .. 20,574 •I. G. B.
