Vehicle falls 300ft after road slips

A man was on the seriously-ill list in Christchurch Hospital last evening with head and chest injuries, suffered when a utility vehicle went off the road and slid 300 ft into a gully beside the Te Oka Bay Road, near Little River, late yesterday morning.

The condition of Robert Anthony Smith, of 38 Russley Road, last evening was reported by the hospital as “fair.” It is thought that the accident occurred when the utility vehicle moved to the side of the road, and the _ surface gave way. Mr Smith was brought the 40 miles to Christchurch Hospital by an ambulance sent from Christchurch.

Two other persons suffered minor injuries in the accident; they were treated at the hospital and discharged. They are Lynette Glenys Averts, of 54 Charlcott Street, and Priscilla Dailey, of 35 Hillary Crescent. Hit by car.—A 12-year-old girl suffered moderately serious arm and leg injuries when she was hit by a car at the intersection of Linwood Avenue and Hay Street about 5.30 p.m. on Saturday. His condition yesterday was described as satisfactory, and his injuries as “not serious.”

Motor-cyclist injured. John Barry Clark, of 59 Rowley Avenue, suffered head, arm and leg injuries when his motor-cycle and a car collided in Cashmere Road about 3.30 p.m. on Saturday. His condition in Christchurch Hospital yesterday was satisfactory.
