Swedes and carrots plentiful

Swedes, carrots, and cabbages, all inexpensive and of good quality, were among the best buys for the housewife, according to prices yesterday at the Christchurch produce markets.

Swedes have'eased slightly in price to 7c per lb retail, and plentiful supplies of carrots will be available at up to 7c per lb:

Cabbages have risen slightly in price to up 39c each, but the advancing season is bringing better and better quality on to the markets, and the prices are reflecting this. Apples and pears still provide the best fruit buy, and Stunner, Delicious, and Rome Beauty are plentiful. There is a shortage of cooking apples, through Granny Smith having practically finished for the year and Stunners having improved in quality over the last week to become a good eating apple. Winter Cole and P. Barry pears met a good demand at the market.

Oranges are expensive. A few cases of Tauranga oranges went for $8 a case yesterday, and these will retail for; about 30c per lb. A shipment of Australian Valencia oranges next week will relieve the shortage. Ecuadorean bananas are also ex-

peered next week, and Islands bananas later. New potato prices have eased about 5c per lb to 12c to 15c per lb. Other prices were (retail unless otherwise mentioned): —Cauliflowers, up to 33c each; leeks, 25c to 29c a bunch; spinach, 19c to 25c a bunch; silver beet 15c to 19c a bunch; asparagus, first of season, very scarce, up to 65c a bunch; celery, big demand, scarce, up to* 75c a head; spring onions, 12c to 15c a bunch of a dozen radishes, 12c to 15c a bunch; rhubarb, 35c a bunch; parsnips, up to 15c per lb; pumpkin, 12c to 15c per lb; old potatoes, 80c per 101 b bag; onions, 5c to 7c per lb; tomatoes, hothouse, up to 75c per lb; Chinese gooseberries (Kiwi fruit) 49c per lb; tamarillos, 39c per lb.
