Mine work restricted
(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, Sept. 23. State miners in'the Buller district will be confined to a nine-day fortnight, beginning immediately. The reason given by the Under-Secretary of Mines (Mr I. Dick) was that the department could not go on stockpiling coal in the area. Stacks at present held about 40,000 tons. He said he could not say how long the restriction would last but the matter would be kept under review. The step comes after the withdrawal of two colliers from the Westport-Portland run because of the Portland Cement Works being able to stockpile 15,000 tons of coal. This year the State mines have sold 5000 tons from coal stacked apart from ordinary production hut there are 27,000 tons on the Denniston dump and 16,000 tons at Stockton.
