Clouds (4). Totara Maid (8) 8-4. 2.55 p.m.— (T.A.B. double closes 1.25 p.m.) (T.A.B. closes 1.45 p.m.) ASHBURTON CUP $1500; Ilf. 1 9175 MELDIE (4) $-4 (6 g Bell borough—Reverted, R. F. Pankhurst, Invercargill). Looked very impressive when beating milers at Washdyke in July but did not come up to expectations in two starts at the Grand National meeting. Is very good at best. Has had time to freshen and might run this distance out well. A. Robinson. 2 2444 GLAMIS LAD (14) $-3 (9 g Kurdistan—Glamis Castle, G. G. Hampton, Washdyke). Has been racing consistently well since winning on his home course in July. Solid effort for first among milers on first day of meeting. Might be hard if ground eased a little. G. Wright. 3 8807 TIME AND TIDE (8) 8-2 (9 g Dogger Bank—Margaret Jane, J. C. Tomkinson, Riccarton). Has been a.bit disappointing lately but, although seventh, was not far from the major plaee-getters in.the mile on the first day. Has shown his best form over more ground. G. Mein.

4 9532 HAY BURNER (3) 8-1 (6 g Jekyll—United Princess, J. J. Cowan and J. D. Phillips, Riccarton). Good stayer wnich has improved with every race lately. His strong finish for second among milers ort Tuesday has brought him into strong favour for this race. 5 0044 FROSTY LIGHT (4) 7-12 (6 g Freelight—Silver Diane, G. Brick, Riverton). Surprise winner in heavy ground at Washdyke in June but has done little of note in his racing meantime. Only fair race for fourth in high-weight on first day. Chance might brighten if the ground became heavy. E. Low. 6 4334 GRIPPLE (10) 7-12 (6 g Wandering Willie—Legal Tender, B. T. Jones, Washdyke). Placed in three starts at Grand National meeting and ran fair race for close sixth among milers on Tuesday. Consistent enough but has no credentials over this distance. 7 4700 TULAK (12) 7-12 (6 g Afghanistan—Renloch, D. J. Thistoll, Riccarton). Well back all the way in mile on first day when having second start in fresh campaign. This distance will be more to his liking but still might need further racing. R. McCann. 8 6979 BRIGHT GIRL (7) 7-11 (5 m Mell ay—llluminate, Mrs M. W. G. Archdale, Ashburton). Has not come up to expectations so far in open class; Good stayer but would have to be taken on trust on her latest form. G. Heaton. 9 9093 CARAFIN (9) 7-11 (5 m Jekyll—Pride 0 s Galway, C. McDonald, Riccarton). Best race since graduating to this class when a fast-finishing third among milers on Tuesday. Stays well and would be hard to beat if she repeated that form. D. Sanderson. 10 0050 EMPIRE KING (2) 7-11 (9 g Empire Way—Premar, W. M. Turner, Washdyke). Would have little chance of winning on his latest showings. Finished last of 14 in mile on Tuesday. M. Thornley. 11 00 EQUAL CHANCE (11> 7-11 (6 g Eastern Nip—Lucky Princess, M. C. Watson, Halkett). Would need to improve greatly on anything he has shown in his two starts on present campaign to cause an upset 12 0521 KRISTE (13) 7-11 (7 g Pictavia —Juriste, H. Lang, Sefton). Beat weak field of hack stayers over this distance on Tuesday. In right form but this will be harder. K. Morton. 13 2100 MAGIC MAN (5) 7-11 (7 g Magic Carpet—Great Surprise, C. McDonald, Riccarton). Showed up for a while but drifted from turn in mile on Tuesday. Won

over this distance on course in hack class in June. G. 14 40*14 RUFFINO (1) 7-11 (7 S Empire Way—Kildaro, W. M. Turner, Washdyke), won over hurdles on final day of Grand National meeting and went soundly again to finish fourth in open sprint on Tuesday. Is just the type to cause a surprise. B. Murfitf, Riccarton). Ran on solidly for sixth after getting back early in the corresponding event on first day. Won impressively at Grand National meeting last month and would take beating here if ground eased a little. M. Skelton. 2 1141 LORD NELSON (8) 8-5 (4 g My Pal —United Princess, J. J. Cowan and J. D. Phillips, Riccarton). Showed outstanding form in hack grade and made big impression with winning open-class debut among sprinters on Tuesday. Will be one of top fancies. R. McCann. 3 6803 FLYING MELDA (3) 8-4 (7 m Messmate —Flying Reida, M. E. Butler, Temuka). Must be rated sound chance after strong finish for third in sprint on first day. This seems her best distance. G. Mein. 4 8284 CHOTA (1) 8-1 (6 g Eastern Nip—Queen Simper, M. R. Jones, Washdyke). Last-start fourth was as a hurdler at Waimate in May. Failed to win in 18 starts last season but gained a few placings. Not fancied at this distance. D. Hunt, 5 7090 FOXTAIL (2) 8-1 (5 m Ribotlight—Foxplay, G. D. Lee, Riccarton). Tailed off all the way when making fresh start in sprint on Tuesday, Would need to improve a stone on that form to have any chance. M. Thom- « 1111 PALLEY (7) 8-1 (4 m My Pal — Her Ex, R. B. Taggart, Riccarton). Speedy mare with a record of five wins and a second from six starts. Has not raced for 10 months but has the pace to make a winning debut in open class. G.
