Ski-field reports
Snow conditions on most skifields are still good, according to reports compiled by the Canterbury Ski Association at midday yesterday. Reports for the various fields are:—Coronet Peak.—Last fall 2in on Saturday. Good' ski-ing. No snow at base of uphill facilities. Chairlift and ski school operating. Weather cloudy; road clear. Mount Chessman. Good snow; skiable level, 5000 ft. Two tows working and access tow from 4306 ft. Craiglebum Valley.—No new snow; conditions excellent; skiable level 4000 ft Hill tows working; road open; chains should be carried. Mount Olympus.—Light fall last Sunday; skiable level 4000 ft; all tows operating. Only 10 minute walk in four-wheel-drive vehicle. Temple Basin.—No new snow; conditions good; skiable level 4500 ft; tows working; goods lift working Saturday and Sunday mornings. Fox's Peak.—Light fall on Saturday. Average snow depth 24in; snow firm. Skiable level 4000 ft; three tows operating. No chains required. Erewhon Park.—Snow conditions good. Skiable level, 3500 ft. Both tows operating. Lake Ohau.—Last fall on Sunday; snow conditions excellent. Skiable level, 4500 ft. Two tows operating. Amur!.—Snow fell last weekend; good conditions; three tows operating. Road clear to hut. Porter Heights —Good snow conditions; learners, access, main and high tows operating. Chains not required. Ban on fireworks The Queensland State Government has announced a ban on the retail sale of fireworks in the state next year. The only place that children will be able to see fireworks will be at public functions authorised by special permits; children will be allowed to celebrate only with sparklers.—Sydney, Sept. 9.
