Police appreciate help by public
Public co-operation with the police in reporting offences was yesterday praised by the head of the Christchurch C. 1.8. (Detective Chief Inspector B. Wilkinson).
A telephone call to the police by a woman who reported seeing two youths attempting to enter a house in Memorial Avenue on Wednesday afternoon lead to the swift apprehending of the youths at the scene. This sort of co-operation greatly assisted the police, Detective Chief Inspector Wilkinson said. A similar call to say that someone was inside the premises of Taylors, Ltd, 32 Lichfield Street, on Tuesday night enabled police to cordon the area quickly. The juvenile offenders responsible for thefts from the building were later caught. A large number of people had also volunteered information concerning thefts f-om cars after the discovery of about $lOO worth of stolen property in a cave at Moncks Spur was announced last week. About $lOOO worth of radios, car headrests, gloves, tools, bags, sheepskin rugs, clothing and spare wheels have been recovered by detectives in the last four days. The property was found in cars in a house and in Hagley Park. Some radios were found in holes in a retaining wall on the Port Hills. Two youths have been arrested in connection with the thefts. Detectives are still making enquiries to find the persons responsible for the thefts of
the property found in the cave. The public response in this case had been “terrific” and the information offered was greatly appreciated, said Detective Chief Inspector Wilkinson.
