SHIELD GAMES
Otago, Bay rejected (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The Auckland Rugby Union last night decided not to accept special Ranfurly Shield challenges from Hawse’s Bay and Otago. These challenges were lodged after Auckland won the shield from Canterbury on August 28. Otago was due to play an ordinary challenge, and Hawke’s Bay a special one, against Canterbury. Injuries, difficulty in players getting time off work, and an already strenuous programme were reasons given at the Auckland union meeting for not accepting the special challenges. Ordinary challenges were accepted from Counties, next Saturday, North Auckland, on September 18, and Waikato, on September 25. These teams were scheduled to play matches against Auckland at Eden Park before the shield was won.
