Badminton seeds defeated

The young Hawke’s Bay player, P. Shirley caused the first real upset of the New Zealand badminton championships when he beat the national representative and fifth seed. M. Stossel (Wellington), in the third round of the men’s singles last evening.

' The unseeded Shirley demonstrated superb reflexes by reSeatedly managing to retrieve le New Zealand players* smashes, and forcing his opponent into errors. Shirley’s height, aided by a leap into the air on the point of impact, enabled him to produce a very fine smash of his own. The Hawke's Bay player swept through Stoesel’s defence In the first game without allowing his opponent to score. Stoesel made a better beginning in the second game and Shirley succumbed easily after the first half dozen points, in an attempt to reserve his stamina for the deciding game. The over-all score was 154, 2-15, 15-3. Shirley has created a reputation as a “giant-killer” this season. HebeatStossel and another member of this season’s New Zealand Whyte Trophy squad, F. Glrvan (Hawke’s Bay), in the Hdwke’s Bay championships, W. B. Johns (Auckland), a New Zealand representative in the Thomas Cup world final in Kuala Lumpur in 1969, in the North Island and Auckland Centennial championships, and put R. Livingston, the Australian champion, out of the Wellington championships in the first round a fortnight ago. Shirley’s sudden rise could partially be explained by the fact that he has been able to receive regular tuition by, and play against, the New Zealand professional coach, Mr Eddie Ng Boon Ooh, a former Malaysian schoolboy International, who is based in Hawke’s Bay. The seventh seed in the mens singles. D. Reeks (Auckland), became the victim of another upset In the third round when he was beaten by th* unseeded Wellington player, J. Rowe. A player who has been on the verge of greater success since he became a member of the national squad In 1969, Rowe beat Reeks quite comfortably, 154, 15-4. The eighth-seeded D. Gloyn (Manawatu) also had a lucky escape in a hard-fought battle with B. Hall (Auckland). The contest lasted for 55 minutes, with two of the games going into setting, and Gloyn finally winning, 14-18, 18-16, 15-4. All the seeds advanced safely Into the quarter-finals of the women’s singles. However, Miss L. Gow (Auckland), a daughter of Mrs V. Gow, the women’s record-holder for the number of appearances for the Dominion, eliminated Mrs G. Waller (nee Steel), of Wellington, a member of the successful New Zealand Über Cup team last July. Th former New Zealand Thomas Cup squad member, G. A. Miller (Canterbury), who has

had a potentially brilliant career interrupted by a series of injuries, made a welcome return to competition last evening for the first time this season. He partnered J. Patton, the convener of the Canterbury representative selection panel, in the men’s doubles. However, the pair were beaten, 15-13, 18-16, by the third seeds, J. W. Compton and J. Rowe (Wellington). In the women’s doubles, Mrs V. Gow and Miss A. Gow (Auckland) beat the third-seeded pair, Mrs G. Waller (Wellington) and Miss J. Purser (Taranaki), in the second round. Results were:
