Promotions week for Y.W.C.A.

It is not very often that the public are treated to a show especially for their benefit—and free of charge. But this is precisely what the Y.W.C.A. of Christchurch is doing next week.

Starting this Friday, and ending on September 17, the week of promotion and activities is called “Hi-time, Y-time.” “The idea behind the week is to make the public more aware of our work and encourage them to take part in all the different activities provided by the Y.W.C A.,” said the Christchurch general secretary (Miss P. McDonald). “A lot of people are interested in taking part in classes such as yoga, millinery, and weaving, but are not aware that the Y.W.C.A. provides them. We are hoping to create more interest in our activities.” Activities will begin with a jumble sale and sales table at the Y.W.C.A. clubrooms in Madras Street, at 10 a.m. on Friday. Saturday is an open day—“really our biggest day,” said Miss McDonald. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. the public can see a series of demonstrations by the association’s activity groups in Latimer Square. This will include yoga, country and ’ traditional dances, ballet, gymnastics, and fencing. The art class is having a “field week-end,” and will be outside in Latimer Square on Saturday and Sunday.

Shrimpton, the national Y.W.C.A. president, who will speak on her trip to the association’s world conference in Ghana. An “International Happening” is planned for Wednesday evening at the clubrooms, and on Friday activities will wind up with a wine and cheese evening and fashion parade. Throughout the week city and suburban shops will be mounting window displays of the association’s activities. Information booths will be sited in Cathedral Square and at Northlands shopping mall.

As well as the outdoor activities, demonstrations of weaving, crochet, canework', millinery, rugmaking, and trampolining will be held inside the clubrooms. All these will be compered by the Radio 3ZM personality, Dick Weir.

On Sunday afternoon a reunion of former members, present members, and campens will be held at the association’s permanent campsite, Heyders Road, Spencerville. A crochet marathon is planned for Monday, when members of the Y.W.C.A. crochet club will be
