Welcome to plan

(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. The possibility of an export market being developed for coal has been welcomed by the national secretary of the United Mineworkers of New Zealand (Mr J. White).

Commenting today on Mr Shelton’s statement, Mr White said: “We would be happy to see an export market set up; this would give employment to a great number of miners, who are at present wondering when they will be out of a job.” Such a venture would almost certainly be private, probably being handled by both New Zealand and Japanese firms.

“We have always believed that the mining of valuable West Coast coal should be done by the State,” said Mr White, “but we will take no ’dog-in-the-manger’ attitude to any project put forward. “It is obvious that the State is not going to do anything, so if the coal is privately handled that is better than nothing. It will mean employment for a lot of miners.”
