Axe attack on wife

(N.Z. Press Association)

HAMILTON, Sept, 7.

A man who knocked his wife unconscious with the back of an axe was found not guilty of attempted murder when he appeared in the Supreme Court in Hamilton today. He was, however, found guilty of an alternative charge of injuring with intent to cause grievious bodily harm. John Frank Lemmon, aged 31, a bush contractor (Mr G. R. Joyce) was charged with attempting to murder his wife, Ngawini Lemmon, at Rotorua, on May 9. He pleaded not guilty before Mr Justice Perry.

Lemmon admitted that on previous occasions he had beaten his wife.

On the day in question he was upset because his wife would not let him take the children for a week-end in Tokoroa. He said he was also upset because he felt his wife was being unfaithful to him, and she no longer wore his ring. On seeing her watching him with a "cheeky grin” on her face he had lost control and the incident occurred.
