JAYCEES ' GAMES APPEAL

A nationwide appeal to raise funds for the 1974 Commonwealth Games will be launched next week. Organised by the Riccarton Chapter of Jaycees, the appeal is expected to raise about .$250,000.

The organisers hope that every family throughout New Zealand will buy each week a special 20c Commonwealth Games stamp from a dairy, grocer, or supermarket Families are asked to buy one stamp a week for the five weeks of the appeal. The chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (Mr R. S. Scott) described the appeal as one of the most ambitious undertaken by a relatively small group. The appeal funds would be used to help to finance the “extras” for running the Games, such as travel subsidy costs, accommodation, food, and other needs of visiting athletes. Mr Scott said that this project, which was an appeal to all families, was connected in no way with the national

appeal being held by the

Games organising committee. For the appeal, every family in the country will receive a Games appeal card;

in rural areas the local grocer has been given supplies for his district. The special Commonwealth Games stamps have been sent to some 8000 dairies, grocery stores, and supermarkets round New Zealand. These stamps will be on sale for 20c each a week for the next five weeks. The stamps should be placed in the family appeal , card, and when the card contains five stamps it may be sent to the appeal headquarters in Christchurch and exchanged for an official colourful Commonwealth Games car sticker.

Sales of the stamps will be recorded by computer, and progress tallies will be available almost immediately after each week’s trading has been completed.

The mayors of all cities and boroughs have been asked to help in promoting this appeal and in many centres prominent sportsmen and sports administrators will lend their support publicly.

The photographs show employees of the Christchurch Chief Post Office sorting the 8000 boxes of cards, stamps, and literature sent to groceries, dairies, and supermarkets round the country and the Games supporter sticker which can be exchanged for five stamps.
