WELLINGTON, Sept. 7. Z The casting vote of the I Acting Chairman of Committees, Mr H. R. Lapwood,; had to be used tonight to enable the Government to win a division in Parlla-I ment.
• Voting on a Government closure motion on debate on the estimates for overseas trade was tied, 35-35, when the Speaker (Sir Roy Jack) failed to vote.
The Opposition had granted five pairs—a device which would have maintained the Government’s majority by one with the Speaker voting. The Acting Chief Government Whip (Mr J. R. Harrison) said that pairs had been granted Mr A. E. Allen (Franklin), who is in hospital, Sir Leslie Munro (Hamilton West), Mr L. C. Schultz (Hauraki), Mr H. C. Templeton (Awarua) and the Minister of Housing (Mr Rae), who are overseas.
Two other Ministers also
were absent tonight The Minister of Justice (Mr Riddiford) Is ill and the Minister of Lands, (Mr Maclntyre) had been given leave to address the University of Otago surveying students.
