Fencing
Canterbury’s high school fencers had every reason to feel satisfied with the fine showing they made against technically superior North Island teams at the national secondary schools championships, held in Christchurch recently. Auckland, the strongest fencing centre in the country, as usual won the major honours. It was first in all the teams and individual events and as well took many of the minor placings. However, the performances of three Canterbury fencers were most encouraging. The three, Sue Thivrlng, Virginia Aitken and Barry Garland, .were the only non-Aucklanders to gain placings. Thivrlng and Aitken were fourth and fifth respectively in the girls’ individual foil and Garland took second place in the boys’ sabre.
