Lee wins table tennis title

• e The Press” Special Service WANGANUI. R. E. Lee (Hamilton) and Miss A. Stonestreet (Auckland) became the new national table tennis champions at Wanganui on Saturday.

In the women’s semi-finals, Miss Stonestreet easily beat Miss D. Wade, and Mrs Boswell wore down Miss G. Kemp. Miss Kemp picked ojf some good backhands and won the first set, but Mrs Boswell's physical and match fitness told in the end.

The title-holder, G. Murphy won the first men’s semi-final when he proved a shade superior to J. Morris at the half volley, and hit game and won the match in four sets. Loke Sim Wong led, 15-10, before winning the first set against Lee closely and levelled at 15-all before dropping the second. He was hitting well in bursts —as he usually does —and at this stage it seemed just a question of when these bursts would come. The third set was again scrappy and Lee made less mistakes, to win it, 2H6.

As usual Lee’s footwork was almost nonexistent but his reach and reflexes kept him on top and he took the match from a quieter Wong, 21-19. Otago took a senior title when Foster and Auckland’s A. Tomlinson recovered amazinginly after losing the first two sets, 21-12, 21-6, to win in five with some superb attacking and counter attacking over Morris and O’Carroll.

Miss Stonestreet began very aggressively against Mrs Boswell in the women s final winning it,

21-6. Sbe then seemed to slow down and went to 2-1 in quite casual fashion before tightening up in the fourth to win the Lee was a very confident player in the men’s final and Murphy was just that little bit behind all the way to lose the first two ses, 16 and 15. It was point for point in the third before Lee edged home 21-17.

MATCHIC ON FRIDAY Loke Sim Wong continued bis Sit form on the Friday evenwhen he had a good half-ey-hit session against T. O’CarroU (Hamilton) to win in four sets. In the other quarterfinals, Murphy beat Borlase for the first time. R. Lee defeated Canterbury’s Ling Nan Ming after dropping the first set, and J. Morris beat B. Foster very narrowly. Morris had all the luck that was going in this excellent match, and the little luck that there was was the only difference between the two.

In the men’s doubles, Murphy and H. Ridley surprised by beating Kling and Otago’s Yik Chun Kwong in the quarter-finals. Ming and Miss Taylor were beafen by Morris and Miss Y. Fogarty in the mixed doubles to leave Canterbury’s senior hopes resting with Wong The top two seeds in the women’s singles both went out in the quarter-finals, Miss Fogarty rarely seemed likely to hit through Mrs Boswell’s determined defence and the junior Miss Stonestreet, playing very intelligently .to beat Mrs N. Houlihan, Mrs Houlihan was

understandably struggling to reach top form all week after one inter-club match for the tournament and a baby six weeks ago.

UNDER 1* FINAL In a fine wider 16 boys’ singles final. Hamilton’s B. Attwood beat Canterbury’s M. Burrowes. 14-21, 21-16. 21-18. - Both players hit well and the game could have gone either way. Burrowes may have felt a littli disappointed in defeat after having beaten -Attwood twice this season. Canterburys last hope in the under 18 boys’ singles, W. Adamson, went down in the semi-final to G. P. Rau (Auckland).

Miss B. Taylor progressed a similar distance In the girls' event, losing to her old rival Miss K. Fraser (Franklin) in straight seta. On the final morning, Canterbury was left in four junior doubles events. Burrowes and G. Thomson (Southland) lost their under 18 semi-final and J. Morris and A. Breckenridge lost their under 16 final. However, G. Rhind and K. Duffy won the under 16 doubles from an unseeded poeltlon, and Fraser won the under 18 girls’ doubles. Canterbury made a clean sweep of the senior (over 35) events when 3. Armstrong beat the local No. 1, N. Tizard, 21-11, 21-14, and T. May beat A. Eden (Nelson) in three close sets. Armstrong was clearly superior in the men’s singles. Wanganui’s Miss M. Broadbent repeated her annual habit of winning the veteran womens title when she beat Manawatu’s Mrs E. M. Rush in a protracted final, 17-21, 21-18, 21-15. The win was Miss Broadbent’s 1 eighth and her fifth consecutive title. Results of Saturday’s play were: OFEN Men’s singles.—Semi-finals: G. B.
