FOR YOUNG READERS

Children- in the standards with a yearning. for fantasy will probably already be familiar with John Hatfield’s "Quintilian” books. The latest addition to the series, QUINTILIAN MEETS MR PUNCH (Jonathan Cape, 112 pp.), presents a further action-packed episode in the fast-moving hero’s colourful career. The type of character used in itself gives an indication of the book’s nature: the main character (Oliver) is the son of -he curator of a toy museum in which lives a china dog, Quintilian. Together, the dog and master encounter the Weather Man, a rag doU, some tin soldiers, Aunt Sally, and, of course, Mr Punch; they explore appropriately incredible places, including The House that Jack Built. Youngsters not familiar with these books may require a little time to adjust before they become totally absorbed in this fascinating world.
