Proposal not favoured

The proposed appointment of county fire committees seemed an elaborate and unnecessary complication of the rural fire system that had proved satisfactory, said Dr W. R. Holmes at a meeting of the, North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday. “There is no reason to upset the present arrangement, which has worked well over a large part of the South Island, at least,” he said. “Local problems, where they exist, can be solved locally.” Dr Holmes was commenting on a proposal from the National Water and Soil Conservation Organisatilon to set up committees. The board decided to tell the authority that it considered the present system adequate and efficient, and that no problems had arisen for the board.
