Family fare

Judging by the numbers which fill the V. R. Skellerup Hall seven nights a week and Cowles Stadium on regular occasions also, badminton has ' become, firmly entrenched as a thriving social sport in Canterbury. But participation does not begin and end with families playing in the president’s D or E grade for the sheer enjoyment alone, if the entries received for the New Zealand championships to be played throughout next week are any indication. Best-known of the families travelling to Christ-

church are the Pursers, from Taranaki. R. H. Purser has won the national singles title on six occasions, including the last four seasons in succession. His brother, B. Purser, is already a New Zealand representative and is the “heir apparent” to his brother as the Dominion’s leading player of the future. A sister, Miss J. Purser, will also be playing. Entries of a similar nature include five members of the Skeen and three of the Gow families (both of Auckland), four from the Gloyn family (Manawatu) and four from the Skelt family (Southland).
