Iraq denies shooting
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter-—Copyright) BAGDAD, Sept. 2. The Iraqi President (Mr Hassan, Bakr) left hospital yesterday “after treatment for a slight illness.” Official Iraqi sources have denied a newspaper report of an unsuccessful attempt on the President’s life.
The official Iraqi news agency reported that President Bakr was admitted to hospital on Monday for a check-up. He was said to have been indisposed for a few days as a result of a minor illness but was now in good health. Embassy sources in Beirut and in London denied a report published by the Lebanese pro-Egyptian newspaper “Al-Moharrer” yesterday that an Army officer shot the President in the left arm and shoulder during a garden party on August 26. The sources called the report completely unfounded. They said that a formal statement would probably be issued by a British and a French doctor who had been treating the President for a heart and kidney ailment.
