Major Leacroft

Sir,—Some aspects of the news item in today’s issue concerning the death of Major J. Leacroft, M.C. and Bar, R.F.C., require clarification. His score was 25, not 21, but was far from being one of the highest on either side. He was thirty-fourth on the list of British aces, and ninety-seventh on the Allied and enemy list. While his 25 in 11 months is a commendable feat, it does not compare with some of the rapid totals achieved during the fierce battles of 1917-18.

Pride of place must go to Lothar von Richthofen, younger brother of the ace of aces, Manfred. He scored his 40 victories in only 77 days before being wounded, while, on the Allied side. Bishop scored 25 in six weeks, and 45 in six months, McCudden 50 in six months, and the Canadian, Collishaw, 16 in 27 days.—Yours, etc., G. E. C. READE. September 1, 1971.
