“A local operator has established a small manufacturing unit at Ross based on opossum skins. Full time staff now numbers about seven and they are having difficulty in keeping up with orders,” the Commissioner for the West Coast (Mr D. B. Dallas) wrote in his latest annual report.
“Two new units are under way for processing eels—one using a disused dairy factory. A large amount of capital is being employed.
“A second modem greenstone manufacturing unit is now operating at Hokitika. “A sheet metal and electrical unit is expanding rapidly and is on the brink of the export market. “A new embryo electronics unit is established and is currently starting an assault on the North Island market with a high-quality amplifying upit. “A, Christchurch-based manufacturer of women’s fashion goods has established a unit in Greymouth. “A footwear firm and a firm manufacturing sporting goods have given close consideration to establishing units in Greymouth but an apparent shortage of women operatives is a deterrent.
“An operator in the automotive field has commenced manufacture of a utility vehicle based on a special import licence for second-hand engine units from Australia. “Dispatch Foundry- is expanding its market through the appointment of better distributors. “Westland Breweries, Ltd (now a subsidiary of Dominion Breweries, Ltd,) is now supplying draught and bottled beer to Nelson. “All of the foregoing except the eel-processing have had assistance from our office in some form.”
