Tourism better than coal

SERVICES

“Tourism has been neglected in the Buller area to date, but this offers by far the greatest prospect of direct and immediate benefits to the economy,” the Commissioner for the West Coast (Mr D. B. Dalias) says in his latest annual report. “The Chamber of Commerce has been awakened to the possibilities and is enthusiastic about the

activities of the Tourism Development Committee. The latter held its third meeting in Westport and spent the two following days visiting prospective tourist features and accommodation facilities, and meeting people in the industry as far north as Karamea. “An early announcement of intention to proceed with the Karamea-Collingwood road link would give further stimulus to the

community to accelerate development of tourist facilities. “The Mines Department is already co-operating and has an important role in the tourist industry by providing facilities and guidance and commentary for parties visiting the coal plateau. "Tourism will do far more for the economy of Buller than the export of a million tons of coal per annum.”
