Bedford wins 5000 metres

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON. West Germany completed its expected athletics triumph over Britain, although the record Crystal Palace crowd of 120,000 had eyes for one man only—the controversial British distance star, D. Bedford.

While the easily-superior West German team was wrapping up an 118-94 men’s victory and an 81-54 women’s win in the two-day match, Bedford’s was the star turn with a debonair win in the 5000 metres.

The 21-year-old Londoner and European record-holder over 5000 and 10,000 metres, looked untroubled by his shock eclipse in the recent European championships in Helsinki as he strode to an almost lighthearted victory in 13min 40sec. Bedford devastated the field to win by more than 15 seconds despite intermittent chest pains.
