AUGUST WARM

Last month was the second warmest August on record, according to the Meteorological Office at Christchurch Airport. In fact, the month’s weather was remarkably similar to that of August last year as both Augusts had the same maximum and mean temperatures, and the same number of hours of sunshine. The only difference was that last month’s rainfall was less than half that of the previous August. Last monjh the maximum temperature was 22 degrees C. on August 27, which was only one degree below the record maximum for August —23 degrees C. in 1947. The mean temperature in Christchurch during the month was B.4deg. C. as against the average of 7deg. C., while the minimum was minus 3deg. C. on the nigh( of August 21. The month’s rainfall was 22mm in Christchurch, compared with the average of 50mm. At the airport only 15mm of rain was recorded, compared with the August average there of 53mm. Of the month’s 22mm in town, 10mm fell during the thunderstonn on August 23.
