QATAR CUTS ITS TIES

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

DOHA (Qatar), Sept. 2. The Gulf State of Qatar announced its independence yesterday and decided to end all agreements with Britain. The announcement said: “Qatar will immediately begin taking the necessary measures for joining the Arab League and the United Nations.”

The' statement expressed Qatar’s support for a ninemember federation of the Gulf Emirates and said it believed that such a grouping was the best means for achieving progress and success for all.

A Foreign Office spokesman has said that the British Government welcomed this decision, which had been taken with its agreement.
