French nuclear tests

Sir, —Your editorial comment today that France ought to announce a cessation of nuclear weapon testing in deference to the fears of Pacific countries is very welcome. In French Polynesia we now have an extreme colonialism with the dominating Power’s main energies directed into keeping its military juggernaut running smoothly. Thus, where is the timetable for self-government by the people of French Polynesia? What are the plans for the development of a viable, indigenous economy? It is argued sometimes that the Tahitians, etc., are quite content to live on French hand-outs, but are the majority of them so different from Polynesians elsewhere that they are quite satisfied with being the servants of a country at the opposite end of the world? The largest and strongest country in Polynesia is New Zealand, and so we should act as if we are concerned about the fate of the French Polynesians.—Yours, etc., W. R. SYKES. Prebbleton, August 31, 1971.
