No whitebait was available in Christchurch yesterday, the first day of the season.
This was not unusual as fishing is in daylight only and as the season only opened yesterday, Marine Department inspectors would have been the first to .have shown interest if. any had appeared at the markets. According’ to one wholesaler, the indications are that there will be', little in commercial quantity until tomorrow. Weather on the West Coast was not good for whitebaiting' yesterday.
The photograph shows Mr Jack Taylor, one of the few to try his luck in the muddy waters of the Buller River yesterday. His efforts did not go unrewarded.
