Kalgoorlie upsets
(N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY. The New Zealand sprinter, Kalgoorlle, upset when he won at Randwick at odds of 33/1 yesterday. Kalgoorlle, ridden by the former New Zealander, B. Wood, an apprentice, came from fifth at the turn with a well-timed run to win the Orangeville Handicap (six furlongs). The New Zealand horse had a far better record than anything else in the race, but was completely neglected in the betting. He came to Australia early in the winter for the Brisbane winter carnival, but had only two runs there and was last each time.
Kalgoorlle is now in the Sydney stables of the former New Zealander, H. N. Wiggins. He won by three-quarters of a length from Bogan Glen (10/1) with Sparkling Red (14/1) a similar distance away third. Kalgoorlie’s victory 1 was the nineteenth of his career and was worth *2OOO to his owners. The former New Zealand mare, Joy Maree (Harleigh—Wish Me Luck) failed by only a short half head to win the St Aubin Stakes (seven furlongs). She was beaten in a tight finish by Moral Vale (6/1) with a neck to Lady Skyrush. Joy Maree was sent out 9/2.
Another former New Zealand horse, Fernando (Woodfield— Eastern Jewel), which is in the stable of T. Brosnan, won the next race, the Havilah Stakes (10 furlongs). Fernando, backed from 6/4 to start 5/4 on favour, ite. won by two lengths from Kobadah Lad (Aldmedes— Charmer) at 20/1, with a neck to Deerfoot (5/1) third. The former South Island filly, Caledonian Lass, showed promise of winning soon when she ran fourth in the A.J.C. Stakes (one mile). ’ T
Caledonian Lass (Lomond— Careys) led to the turn but f»d£d slightly in the straight. The filly, which is owned by Mr L. Foyster, was having onlv her second run in Australia and was at 40/1. ~Th® F ace was won hy Staid «/2) Better Gleam and Lady Celeste.
