Linwood’s building plan

The Linwood Rugby Club, one of the oldestestablished clubs in Christchurch, is about to enter the final stages of its financial campaign to raise funds for a fine new sporting complex in Kearneys Road, Aranui.

The club has bought six acres of land, which was originally owned by the Canterbury Education Board and was to be used for a primary school. The entire floor area of the new clubrooms—which will contain lounges, games and observation rooms, changing facilities, and squash courts—will be 8500 sq. ft. A Rugby ground and parking areas will also be built

The total cost of the development will be about $165,000. The Linwood club already has $68,000 towards the capital cost and is confident that it will soon be able to raise an additional $20,000, so that the full complex, except for the playing field, can be built at the outset and not in stages. An under-weight teams’ trek last Saturday raised $lOOO of the amount needed.

Linwood has had its own clubrooms in St Asaph Street since 1951, but these are now totally inadequate in size and appointments, and are in a poor state of repair. It is hoped that the new clubrooms will be completedl by next year.
