Port charges may rise

A report before the board from the port development committee recommended that the chief engineer (Mr J. B. Bushell) and the harbourmaster (Captain D. Holden) visit Australia and Japan as soon as possible to study tug propulsion and handling cf bulk carriers and; materials.

Captain H. R. Champion said he questioned the “as I soon as possible” part of the 'recommendation. “The board wants some guarantee from the Governjment that coal or materials |in bulk are going to be .handled at this port,” he said. The committee’s report, in- ; eluding the recommendation, I was adopted. Mr L. G. Amos said that he ihad read with interest a report of Mr Sutton’s address to the Christchurch Rotary Club in which he had said a million tons of coal from the West Coast might be exported annually through Lyttelton.

“Have you had anything really official?” Mr Amos asked Mr Sutton. “Is this speculation, or have you something up your sleeve we don’t know about?”
