Whisky galore

The well-known stud stock agent, Mr D. B. Clarkson (left) is having difficulty coping with some unexpected generosity.

On Tuesday evening, as agents were preparing for the annual sale of Angus bulls on account of the Te Mania Stud, at Hundalee, a fellow agent, Mr B. H. Browne, of Kaikoura, asked him what he thought the sale average would be. Mr Clarkson said he had no idea, whereupon Mr Browne said he would give him a whisky for every dollar above last year’s sale average. Mr Clarkson related the conversation as the sale was drawing to a close yesterday. At that stage, he said, he had an estimated 173 whiskies owing to him. Mr Browne, however, did not appear in the least upset. An analysis of the sale statistics showed that Mr Clarkson was well on the conservative side, for the sale average was $255 better than last year.
