Two Kowhais berthed at Lyttelton

The arrival at Lyttelton from New South Wales yesterday afternoon of the Union Steam Ship Company's 19-year-otd motor vessel Kowhal would normally have had little Interest, but a vessel with a similar name, the Japan Kowhal, was also in port. However, the similarity ends at the name, because the Japan Kowhal is a modern vessel, three years old, and the Kowhal is a utilitarian freighter of conventional type. However, the Kowhal, whieh is a Glasgow-built freighter, and others of the Union Company's “K” class are vessels of some significance. This class forms the backbone of the Union Company’s fleet today. The “K” class vessels link New Zealand, to New South wales, Victoria and South Australia, and make side trips to Western Australia and Queensland. Also in port yesterday was the Union Company’s four-year-old roll-on vessel Hawea, which trades between Lyttelton and Auckland. Until yesterday the Hawea had covered 269,585 nautical miles during her coastal service, and had handled, more than half a million tons of rollon cargo. ARRIVALS Maori (6.35 aan.), 7480, Cant J. D.
