“Useless” title

About 150 Left-wing demonstrators tried to invade a hall last night after a 17-year-old girl was crowned “Miss Italy.” Shouting and throwing stones they were driven from entrances to the hall by police using teargas grenades. Inside, the show went on, but when it was all over, Miss Maria Pinnone, of Rome, the newly-crowned “Miss Italy,” said the title was “useless.” “No to the films, no to modelling, no to being a mannequin,” she told reporters. She said she wanted to be a journalist and possibly cover the competition next year. An Italian reporter covering the event had his nose bloodied by a stone thrown during the demonstration. It was not clear why the Leftwingers wanted to get into the hall.
Cycling.—D. Baert (Belgium) won the world professional pursuit cycling championship at Varese, Italy, C. Grosskost (France) won the silver medal, and H. Porter (Britain) the bronze.
