Ashburton competitions festival opens

The Ashburton Competitions Society’s annual festival opened on Monday with 513 competitors performing in the 59 classes completed during the day and evening sessions. Judges generally praised the high standard of performances. Competitors from centres throughout the South Island and several from the North Island are taking part in the festival, and prize-winners yesterday included competitors from as far afield as Auckland and Invercargill. There is a particularly strong representation from Christchurch and Timaru, as well as local competitors.

Five Auckland girls and one boy are attending the festival and competing in Highland, ballet, and tap dancing classes. Catherine Ferguson, of Auckland, produced an extremely high standard of dancing to win the South Island championship in the open Highland fling class at Monday evening’s session. She gained the high total of 86 points, six clear of the runner-up. The judge (Mr B. C. P. North, of Christchurch) said Miss Ferguson gave a very controlled and outstanding performance. She had no technical faults, and her dancing was a delight to watch. Her winning margin was a true indication of her performance, but the standard of the whole class was high and there was little separating the other competitors. The dancing section has received particularly strong support, with entries of up to 30 competitors in some classes. One hundred and twentytwo cups and trophies, are at stake in the seven sections of the competitions, including 14 presented for the first time this year. In the following results competitors are from the Ashburton County unless otherwise stated. VOCAL ANO INSTRUMENTAL Judge: Mr G. M. Martin, Christchurch (Mr D. F.
