SINGLES TO MISS EVERT

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SOUTH ORANGE (New Jersey). Miss C. Evert (United States), returning almost everything hit to her, beat Miss H. Gourlay, of Australia, 6-4, 6-0, to win the women’s singles title at the Eastern lawn tennis championships. Miss Evert, a small, thin blonde, who was the star of the recent Wightman Cup matches, never allowed Miss Gourlay to hold her service during the match. She consistently forced the 24-year-old Australian, ranked seventh in her country, into errors.

Using a hard, accurate, two-handed backhand as her main weapon, Miss Evert blasted drives into the comers of the court.

C. Graebner (U.S.) beat P. Barthes (France), 6-3, 6-4, for the men’s singles title.
