FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation. — A deep depression centred to the south of Southland is moving east, and a strong, squally south-west airstream covers New Zealand. Forecast: Central Marlborough and the Sounds.— North-westerly winds; fresh and gusty at times. Mainly fine at first. Winds decreasing and possibly backing to south-westerly during the day with cold, showery weather developing. Nelson. —Westerlies; strong and gusty at times. Showers about the western ranges with isolated thunderstorms and hail. Scattered showers elsewhere with increasing fair periods; becoming colder with snow down to 2000 ft.
Kaikoura Coast and Canterbury.—Southwesterly winds spreading northwards during the morning; fresh and gusty at times; cold with showers and snow down to 1500 ft. Buller and Westland. —South-westerlies; strong and squally at first, but slowly becoming moderate. Further showers, with some hail and thunder, but fair periods increasing; cold; snow to 1500 ft.
Outlook.—West Coast, Canterbury, Kaikoura Coast, Central Marlborough and the Sound: Showers. Nelson: Mainly fine. CHRISTCHURCH READINGS
