Bus subsidy attacked
(NJI. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 15. The Road Carriers’ Association was shocked by a suggestion that the Government might Use road taxes to subsidise passenger buses, said the association's president (Mr W. W. Knox). Mr Knox was protesting about the Cabinet’s subsidy discussions, which will continue tomorrow. • “Commercial road transport supplies nearly half the National Roads Board’s funds and provides a similar amount in ether taxes —it expects the roads to be in usable condition,” Mr Knox said. Essential reconstruction and other projects were being deferred indefinitely, and present undertakings suspended. Maintenance was also diminishing, he said. “We find ourselves paying more and more for less and less.” If the s4m from the petroleum tax was used where subsidies were not a solution, it would be “frittering away” money desperately needed by the National Roads Board, said Mr Knox.
