(N.Z. P.A. -Reuter—Copyright)

SEOUL, August 6.

The typhoon “Olive,” after leaving 60 persons feared dead in southern Japan over the last three days, killed at least 20 people and caused severe damage on the east coast of the Korean Peninsula overnight. The victims in South Korea included nine members of two families killed in landslides near Mukho and Kangnung. South Korean police reported that about 550 houses and other buildings were washed away in floods caused by the typhoon in Kangwon and Kyongsang provinces. About 100 fishermen on board six fishing boats operating in the Sea of Japan, about 50 miles off the port of Sokcho, yesterday have not yet returned to their home port, police said. Typhoon “Olive,” somewhat weakened with maximum winds of 70 miles an hour after scything through the lower half of Japan, brought rainstorms and tidal waves to the Korean east coast. Latest reports said the typhoon was centred about 310 miles east of the North Korean port of Wonsan and moving north-east at a speed of 30 miles an hour. Police in Tokyo earlier today reported there were 27 confirmed dead and 33 missing in Japan.
