Automotive 'swap meet'

Engines, car-parts and even complete cars may be bought, sold or traded at an automotive bring and buy which will be held at Church Corner, Riccarton, on Saturday, August 14.

The event has been organised by the Rodbenders’ car club, which has modelled it on American “swap meets” and has invited members of other clubs and several firms to take part. Each person or group wanting to take part pays $1.50 for a lot—in this case

in the car-park of Haywrights, Ltd, at the comer —and there he sets up his wares, and prepares to haggle with others. The event gives everyone a chance to clean out their garage, the club says: “that junk may be just what someone else is looking for. “Most motor enthusiasts are ’Steptoes* at heart, and collect a good many bits and pieces over the years. This event gives them the opportunity to take a trailerload of junk and swap it for someone else’s trailerload of junk.” The proposed event has attracted such interest that it is believed some enthusiasts even plan to come from Dunedin and set up their lots.
