SENTENCE IN SYRIA

DAMASCUS, Aug. 4.
The Syrian Supreme State Security Court yesterday sentenced five former political leaders, including an ex-head of State, to death In their absence on charges of plotting against the regime.
The sentences were handed down at the end of • mass trial of 99 people, which lasted 10 months. The others convicted received prison terms ranging from hard labour for life to 18 months. Seven had sentences suspended.
Lieutenant General Amin al-Hafez, the Syrian head of State from 1963 to 1966, and now living in exile—was among the five sentenced to death in absentia. He was reported to be in Iraq in June of last year.
General al-Hafez was overthrown in February, 1966, by the present Syrian Chief of State, President al-Assad, together with Major-General Salah Jadid, who was ousted in a bloodless coup last November.
